Akisi came to the Cook Islands in the year 2000 to escape political unrest in her native Fiji. With a background in hospitality and mission, she has travelled extensively – and speaks several languages. They met on the beach one day - and the rest, as they say, is history.
The building that is now Waterline, right on the beach in Arorangi, used to be their home. They lived there until the year 2000, when a large cyclone caused extensive damage. Fate had thrown up an opportunity, and they took it: the opportunity to re-build, as the restaurant they’d dreamed and talked about for so many years.
Today, they live behind the restaurant, and you may spot their two young children Alanah and Dylan running along the sand or playing with 'Chloe' the cat. Guests sometimes say they feel as though they’d been invited to Chris and Akisi’s home to eat - and that’s the way they like it.
The food? Well, suffice to say they know what works. Chris is a dab hand in the kitchen in his own right, but these days former international hotel chef Allan Florita is the master behind Waterline’s menu, creating everything from the blackboard specials to age-old favourites, with both simplicity and style.
On special nights, Chris will be found singing, playing the guitar or harmonica, or jamming with both locals and guests. This, along with the steady sound of the waves on the reef and the hum of good conversation, is the sound-track of Waterline.... the sound of people who love where they live and love what they do.
